Researchers in the Evaluative Clinical Sciences platform at Sunnybrook Research Institute explore the causes, consequences and treatment of disease, with the aims of improving patient care and ensuring health care resources are used efficiently. In addition to research across our ten programs, the platform also includes Sunnybrook’s Practice-based Research and Innovation program, where nursing and allied health-care professionals advance research and the Sunnybrook Hub for Applied Research in Education (SHARE), which fosters education research and scholarship.
Scientists working in evaluative clinical sciences use a range of methods, including randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, survey studies, economic evaluations, administrative database studies and computer simulation studies.
Main areas of study include understanding disease incidence and its geographical distribution, evaluating the efficacy of treatments and diagnostic tests, analyzing health policy, and investigating the economic impact of disease and intervention. Scientists also communicate important information to policy makers in the federal and provincial governments to help them make informed decisions. Research within this platform applies to numerous clinical areas.
The Evaluative Clinical Sciences platform at Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) has a close partnership with the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), a not-for-profit independent research organization funded by the Ontario government and located on the Sunnybrook campus. The Institute for Evaluative Clinical Sciences creates knowledge in the form of reports, research atlases and peer-reviewed articles to help decision-makers and practitioners improve the Ontario health care syste
Within this close partnership, there are many opportunities for mutually beneficial scientific exchanges between ICES scientists and SRI researchers. The platform also shares many resources, including space, equipment and personnel, with ICES.
Visit the ICES website for more information.
Research Rounds
Evaluative Clinical Sciences research rounds are held every Thursday at noon.
Faculty members, trainees and visiting speakers present the results of recently completed or ongoing studies in health services research or evaluative clinical sciences (formerly clinical epidemiology). Presentations are always followed by a lively discussion period.
Presentations are video recorded and posted on a weekly basis. Watch the playlist below:
Practice-Based Research and Innovation
