The Sunnybrook Research Ethics Board (REB) reviews research involving human participants or human biological materials conducted within or on behalf of Sunnybrook. The REB’s role is to ensure the research meets current scientific regulatory, and ethical standards for the protection of human research participants.
Role:
- The primary role of the community member(s) on a REB is to reflect the perspective of the participant.
- Community members review relevant research materials before each monthly meeting and contribute to meeting discussions from the participant perspective.
- A community member is someone who lives in the community that Sunnybrook serves, and/or is a current/past patient, and/or a current/past research participant, or a family member of a patient/participant.
- It is important that community members do not work at or with Sunnybrook or a study sponsor, and are not part of the immediate family of a person who works at or with Sunnybrook.
- Community members should not currently work in the fields of research or law.
- Experience in research, health care, medicine etc. is NOT required (preferable to have no working experience in these areas).
Commitment:
- This is a volunteer position.
- Agree to a three-year term (with the possibility of renewal).
- Attend monthly REB meetings the second Tuesday of every month from 1-4 p.m. (meetings are currently via Zoom but expected to return to in person in the future).
- Review research materials before each monthly REB meeting.
- Provide input and take part in discussions during meetings.
- Review one to two minimal risk studies (studies that do not get reviewed at meetings) each month independently on your own time and complete a reviewer form.
- Be comfortable reviewing electronic documents and able to participate in Zoom meetings.
- Attend monthly REB meetings at Sunnybrook once onsite meetings are allowed.
- Time commitment is about 10 hours per month, this includes the three hour monthly REB meeting.
- Note — there are no costs to you. Lunch and parking passes/transit fare are provided for onsite meetings (once resumed).
