The Canada Research Chairs Program invests up to $311 million per year to attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds. Sunnybrook Research Institute is proud to be home to 18 chairholders achieving research excellence in the health sciences.
Current Canada Research Chairs at SRI

Selection, nomination and administration of Canada Research Chairs at SRI
Sunnybrook Research Institute has adapted its existing institutional practices on the selection, nomination and administration of CRCs to align with CRCP Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Requirements and Practices. These practices aim to eliminate barriers and increase access to the Program by the four designated groups, and to contribute to the University of Toronto’s efforts to meet and exceed its equity and diversity targets.
Sunnybrook Research Institute employs more than 300 scientists and clinician-scientists, 17 of whom hold Canada Research Chairs. A list of current CRCs at SRI is available.
Canada Research Chairs are allocated to, and administered by, the University of Toronto, rather than SRI:
- the university manages the allocation of Chairs to affiliated hospitals;
- hospitals have a CRC sub-allocation and select their own CRC candidates;
- the university is responsible for submitting hospital-based nominations to the CRCP Secretariat; and
- CRC awards are sub-granted to the affiliated hospitals through inter-institutional agreements.
The recruitment and allocation of CRCs by affiliated hospitals is determined by each hospital’s strategic research priorities. At SRI, the business development and analytics office works closely with the research services office at the University of Toronto to administer its Chair allocations. View more information about the internal allocation of CRCs at SRI.

Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion
This institutional public accountability section provides a brief overview of Canada Research Chairs (CRC) at Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) and ongoing efforts to meet the requirements of the Canada Research Chairs Program’s (CRCP) Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan. This information complements information provided on the University of Toronto’s website.
Sunnybrook Research Institute is the research arm of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC), and is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. The university manages a CRC allocation provided by the federal CRCP. This allocation is administered in partnership with nine fully affiliated hospitals in the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network.
Sunnybrook Research Institute is committed to collaborating with the University of Toronto to increase CRC representation of members of the four designated groups (women; Indigenous peoples; persons with disabilities; and members of visible minorities). Both organizations have published action plans that address these issues:
- Sunnybrook Research Institute Canada Research Chairs Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, 2017–2019
- University of Toronto’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan
- Sunnybrook Research Institute’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion
For more information about the Program’s commitments to equity, diversity and inclusion, please consult the following:

Sunnybrook Research Institute is strongly committed to inclusion and diversity within its community and welcomes all applicants for its CRC opportunities, including, but not limited to: women; members of visible minorities; people of all religions and ethnicities; persons with disabilities; LGBTQ2+ persons; and, all others who might contribute to the further diversification of ideas. Sunnybrook Research Institute is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and is in full agreement with the university’s statement of equity, diversity, and excellence, which is excerpted here:
“At the University of Toronto, we strive to be an equitable and inclusive community, rich with diversity, protecting the human rights of all persons, and based upon understanding and mutual respect for the dignity and worth of every person. We seek to ensure to the greatest extent possible that all students and employees enjoy the opportunity to participate as they see fit in the full range of activities that the University offers, and to achieve their full potential as members of the University community.
We believe that excellence flourishes in an environment that embraces the broadest range of people, that helps them to achieve their full potential, that facilitates the free expression of their diverse perspectives through respectful discourse, and in which high standards are maintained for students and staff alike. An equitable and inclusive working and learning environment creates the conditions for our diverse staff and student body to maximize their creativity and their contributions, thereby supporting excellence in all dimensions of the institution.”
Policies to support equity, diversity and inclusion
Although all SRI scientists are cross-appointed to the University of Toronto, SRI and the university have independent CRC recruitment policies. Each is responsible for developing their own processes for managing and administering their own Chairs.
Sunnybrook Research Institute scientists and clinician-scientists, including CRCs, are bound to Sunnybrook policies, including those listed below that promote EDI across Sunnybrook and SRI. These policies are published on the intranet:
- Sunnybrook’s Recruitment & Selection Process policy (HR-0079), which sets specific guidelines with respect to recruitment and selection activities and ensure that fair and equitable processes are applied to all.
- Sunnybrook’s Diversity Statement and Principles policy (ADM-003) and the Respect Program (HR-0047), which articulate statements and principles that signify institutional support for diversity and inclusion and recognize, respect and celebrate the strength and diversity of Sunnybrook’s staff, students, patients and community.
- Harassment, Discrimination and Violence policy (HR-0049), for the recognition and prevention of all sorts of discrimination and harassment in the workplace.
- Whistleblowing policy (HR-175), which encourages all individuals to confidentially report improper conduct by providing an open avenue of communication regarding improper conduct, without fear of reprisal.
- Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), including an e-learning module available to all staff in the Sunnynet.
